The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has ascribed President Akufo-Addo's claimed hesitation to sign the anti-LGBTQI+ bill to the country's overreliance on foreign aid.
During a meeting with members of the diplomatic community, President Akufo-Addo stated that he would wait for the Supreme Court's ruling on the law before making any decisions.Earlier, the Finance Ministry cautioned President Akufo-Addo against supporting the contentious bill, citing potential consequences for international financial help.
The measure, which seeks to impose sanctions on those identifying as LGBTQ+ and those who promote such, has caused heated controversy.
During his Building Ghana Tour in Accra, Mahama addressed the clergy and laid out plans to create a self-sufficient economy to avoid foreign funders from dictating to Ghana.
"Indications are that he [Akufo-Addo] says he won't sign it because someone has filed a suit with the Supreme Court, so he has become involved in some legal troubles.
“This is just the reason for being self-reliant. If you are not self-reliant that is when people can dictate to you. If we were self-reliant nobody would come ask us to do this or do that and so one of the key economic policies we must pursue is one of self-reliance.”
